The stars aligned under the red, white and blue in a big way, and it wasn’t just the league that benefitted.

The 2017 North American Hockey League (NAHL) Top Prospects Tournament came and went early this week from USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Mich., and another historic event shined lights on both individuals and regions with over 250 NCAA and NHL scouts in attendance.

And the Corpus Christi IceRays, along with the South Division, were at the centerfold.

Not every person can say they made it to the National Hockey League.

At 22 years old, goaltender Pheonix Copley checked that off the list last weekend when the Washington Capitals recalled him from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) to back up Braden Holtby in Saturday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings.

The red brick brightens as the early afternoon sun shines on the façade of the Greater Ithaca Activities Center. The steel and glass entranceway facing West Court Street splits the two-story structure down the middle. Two custodial workers cut and edge the grass that starts on the corner of West Court and North Albany Street, spewing blades of green along the sidewalk and the smell of cut grass into the air. The mower and edger clash with the sounds of construction farther down West Court. It’s warm in the sun, but a slight breeze warns one to wear a light jacket.

 

On the building hangs a white banner with a birthday cake covered by the words: “Happy Birthday...40 Years of Community.”
